Leaky mics
A common issue we get reported on "certain" mics, is complaints that the Classic-Sofite isn't removing all of the wind-noise - even with all the slots (ports) covered. This can be caused by a couple of things, and is the reason why slip-on windshields don't offer quite as much protection as basket windshields. In most cases, the issue is with the mic switches or the seal around the XLR connector. If you blow gently across them, you'll probably be able to hear the tell tell low rumble of wind noise. The solution is very simple, a small piece of electrical tape stretched over the switches or around the XLR joint and the seal will prevent the wind getting in.

I use a 10cm Classic Softie with the Sony ECM-XM1 microphone. But I need more wind protection.
The Classic-Softie you are using is the correct model for the ECM-XM1. In extreme wind conditions, we can actually make a Windjammer to fit over the top of the Classic-Softie fur, and the details are below: Description: 10cm Softie Windjammer
Order code: 021702 This will impact on the acoustic transparency, so a little more HF loss. But for extreme wind, it'll certainly help. You may also find that the exposed rear of the microphone and XLR connection is a weak point at which wind noise is picked up. You could try covering it with a soft material. This we find improves things also.

Because the microphone body is tapered you may find that the rubber grommit of the classic softie will not completely seal against the shank.   You can get around this by simply packing it with a soft material to create a seal. This will prevent air getting up underneath the classic softie.   Alternatively, if you are comfortable leaving 50mm at the end to clip the microphone on to a stand. You could opt for the 10cm Classic-Softie: Description: 10cm Classic-Softie (24/25) Order Code: 033023 Web link: http://www.rycote.com/products/033023 UK List Price: £59.00 exc. VAT each   This will leave a smaller gap for you to fill to the shank of the microphone.
